Tree service professionals of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania share the history of some of  the area’s oldest trees.

What Historic Trees are in This Part of the Country?

Trees are the longest lived things on the planet. In an area of such historical significance as Pittsburgh, there are trees that have been around for a great deal. Even though trees have long lives, they must be properly cared for in order to reach their full potential. Tree service companies take this job very seriously and understand the significance of historic trees. If you are interested in learning more about some of the oldest trees in Pittsburgh, read on.

The John Woodruff Oak

John Woodruff was a native of Pittsburgh who went to the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Not only did he go, he won a gold medal for his 800-meter race. He received an English oak from the host country, and it is now planted near the end zone of the football field at Woodruff’s high school in Connellsville. When Mr. Woodruff passed away in 2006, his memorial service was held under that tree as a reminder of his great accomplishment.

The Dawn Redwood at the Botanical Gardens

The specimen that now towers over the botanical gardens in Oakland was started from a seed after 1947, when living dawn redwood trees were discovered in China. This was a major find. Up until that discovery they were thought to be an extinct species, only known through fossil records. When Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens had a major renovation, the tree had to be moved. It was an extensive project that took a week, but the tree was successfully moved to its new location a few hundred yards away.

White Oaks of the Edgeworth Club

These oaks may be the oldest ones on this list. One is 315 and one is 285 years old. The white oak species is one of the longest-lived and provides excellent hardwood for building. These trees were around before the United States was formed. The people of Sewickley take serious care of these trees because they understand the value of these trees.

Sargent’s Weeping Hemlocks at St. Barnabus Nursing Home

The two twisted trunks and branches that grace the entrance of St Barnabus Nursing Home are Sargent’s weeping hemlocks. They seem to bow in reverence, giving a somber reverence to the exterior of religious organization Though no one seems to know exactly how long they have been standing sentinel, they were well established even 50 years ago.

Do You Have Old Trees?

Though these trees are planted in more public spaces, there are many old trees throughout the city on private property as well. If you have such a tree or any full grown tree, it may need special care. Tree health care can help a tree live as long as possible. A certified arborist can help with tree pruning and tree trimming as well as tree risk assessment. If a tree has come to the end of its life, then the experts can perform tree removal efficiently and safely.
